The GetOutAndLearn program uses experiential and adventure-based learning to educationally engage under-served San Francisco youth who are at-risk of dropping out of school. GOAL prepares, encourages and motivates students to graduate from high school, make healthy choices and pursue post-secondary education or meaningful work. Above all, students leave the program with a greater sense of personal responsibility and self-esteem that benefits them and their communities forever.

Wilderness Expedition:

GetOutAndLearn students step out of their comfort zone on a ten-day backpacking expedition in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is a pivotal experience as GOAL students gain the confidence to trust and believe in themselves and their classmates.

Ropes Course Facilitation:

GetOutAndLearn students learn leadership skills through training and mentoring by the Pacific Leadership Institute, in addition to weekly facilitation of the Ft. Miley Ropes Course.

Wooden Crafts:

In partnership with the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park Association at the Hyde Street Pier, GetOutAndLearn students learn hands-on math and science through traditional wooden boat building, rowing and sailing small student built crafts in San Francisco’s Aquatic Park.

Swim Lessons:

GetOutAndLearn students meet weekly at the Presidio YMCA for swim lessons and can opt for CPR/First Aid and lifeguard training while participating in the Waves for Change program.

Get Out And Learn is a program at Downtown High School, located on Potrero Hill in the San Francisco Unified School District.
